HIGHLIGHTS

The laws and ordinances of St Kitts & Nevis are accessible online and on CD Rom with the launch of the official website of the Law Commission.

Mr. Byron highlights the significance of the new development in accessing our laws; it is important for the country to be digitally equipped.

St. Kitts and Nevis now has its laws and ordinances online with the launch of the official website of the Law Commission. The laws can now be accessed at lawcommission.gov.kn as well as on CD Rom. The launch of the website was also accompanied by the delivery of the printed volumes of the Federation’s laws.

As part of a brief but very impressive ceremony hosted at Government House on Wednesday morning 4th March 2020, the new Revised Laws of St. Kitts and Nevis was unveiled by His Excellency the Governor General Sir S. W. Tapley Seaton. During the exercise, Ms Yolande Dash of the Regional Law Revision Centre in Anguilla was on hand to officially hand over the complete set of volumes of the Federation’s laws and to demonstrate the online facility.

Attorney General Hon. Vincent Byron paid tribute to the former Law Revision Commissioner Mr. Israel Mukasa as well as to Legal Researcher of long standing Mr. Rohan Walters for their pioneering work which had begun with the earlier 2002 Revised Laws and continued with the 2009 Revised Laws. He also paid tribute to newly appointed Law Commissioner Ms. Josephine Mallalieu for her role in conjunction with Mr. Rohan Walters in bringing to fruition the 2017 Revised Laws in printed form and online. He expressed appreciation to the Regional Law Revision Centre for their role in the law revision process to date.

The full set of volumes is comprised of the New Revised Edition of the Laws of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Ordinances of the Island of Nevis. They contain all of the laws of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and the ordinances of the Island of Nevis; inclusive of all amendments and new legislation between the period of 2010 to 2017.

Mr. Byron highlighted the significance of the new development in accessibility of our laws. He made reference to the government’s thrust towards digital transformation of the economy, indicating that it was important for the country to become digitally equipped.

“This is a fundamental piece of work that has been done and it will redound to the benefit of all of us who practice or use laws on a daily basis.” He stated. According to him our Federation should be “proud of the progress we have made in improving and updating our laws”.

It is the principal mission of the Office of the Attorney General to provide legal advice and services to and on behalf of The Crown, and to conduct and respond to all matters of litigation for and against The Crown or any Ministry or Agency of the Government.

Importantly, its mandate includes the extensive oversight of the legislative agenda of the Government.

The Office of the Attorney General also provides administrative support for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and superintends all matters relating to the Electoral Office.

The Office of the Attorney General

The Office of the Attorney General is chiefly responsible for providing legal counsel and advice to the Executive Branch of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis. The functioning of the Office is rooted in the Constitution and is further detailed by the provisions of the Attorney General’s Act Cap 3.02 of the laws of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

One of the more prolific manifestations of the advisory functions of the Office of the Attorney General is its contribution to the legislative agenda of the government. As such, the responsibility of preparation of all legislation: from conceptualization to the presentation of Bills and the crafting of Regulations falls within the purview of the office.
