The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis shares the vision of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) and is in full support of the court connected mediation thrust being advanced by that judicial body. This was the message conveyed by Hon. Vincent Byron Jr. the Federation’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Legal Affairs and Communication as he made brief remarks during the launch of a Mediation Awareness Campaign on 12th November 2019 at the Marriott Resort in Frigate Bay, St. Kitts.

According to Minister Byron, work is moving ahead at the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial Complex where a new annex is being constructed. One of the additional services made possible by the erection of the annex will be the availability of three specially dedicated chambers in which mediation exercises will be carried out by a recently expanded corps of mediators who were trained in March of 2019.

The launch ceremony was convened under the auspices of the Judicial Education Institute of the ECSC with support of the Canadian-funded JURIST Project and the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis. The event also featured remarks by: Justice of Appeal and Chairman of the Judicial Education Institute Her Ladyship the Hon. Justice Gertel Thom; President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association Mrs. Dahlia Joseph Rowe; and Chief Justice of the ECSC, Her Ladyship Justice Dame Janice Pereira DBE, LL.D who delivered the feature address.

Also present were Resident Judges Justice Eddy Ventose (who chaired the proceedings) and Justice Trevor Ward QC, High Court Registrar Mrs. Janine Harris Lake, Acting Senior Magistrate Mr. Renold Benjamin, members of the newly appointed National Mediation Committee, members of the Bar Association, the batch of newly certified mediators, and a contingent of students from the Cayon High School.

The members of the newly appointed National Mediation Committee headed by Justice Eddy Ventose were formally presented with their Letters of Appointment while the newly trained mediators were issued with their certificates.

The Attorney General indicated that the new facilities at the annex to the Judicial Complex will be operational by early 2020.
