External observers facilitated for 2020 General Elections despite COVID-19

HIGHLIGHTS

CARICOM Observer team joins with local observers in monitoring the 2020 general elections.
In response to the COVID 19 Pandemic, safety protocols were implemented to facilitate the entry of the team. 
Local observers were also engaged in a virtual training session conducted by the CARICOM in conjunction with local experts
Both Local and external observers stated in official releases that the elections in St Kitts & Nevis was “free and fair, and free from fear”. 
Attorney General commented on the importance of inviting the CARICOM observers, while commending them on doing their job in a professional manner.

 

The Government of St.Kitts and Nevis made successful arrangements to facilitate the visit of a CARICOM Observer team to join with local observers in monitoring the 2020 general elections in the Federation. These arrangements were put in place in spite of the restrictions on travel inwards occasioned by the national response to the Covid 19 pandemic.

The National COVID-19Task Force instituted special protocols to facilitate the entry and ground operations of the team.  These included screening upon arrival,administration of a molecular (RT-PCR) test, housing in a designated government facility, daily screenings by health officials and all other new normal safety protocols.

Local observers were also engaged in a virtual training session conducted by the CARICOM in conjunction with local experts. Nineteen such individuals representing a cross section of civil society benefited from the training initiative.

Both Local and external observers emphasized in official releases to date that the elections done here in St Kitts and  Nevis was “free and fair, and free from fear”.

While there may have been some organizational and administrative hiccups, in no way did it prevent the people of St Kitts and Nevis from exercising their vote.The process by having them (external observers) attend and to be part of the election was very important and was done in a very professional way.”As stated by Attorney General Vincent Byron. 

 

It is the principal mission of the Office of the Attorney General to provide legal advice and services to and on behalf of The Crown, and to conduct and respond to all matters of litigation for and against The Crown or any Ministry or Agency of the Government.

Importantly, its mandate includes the extensive oversight of the legislative agenda of the Government.

The Office of the Attorney General also provides administrative support for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and superintends all matters relating to the Electoral Office.

The Office of the Attorney General

The Office of the Attorney General is chiefly responsible for providing legal counsel and advice to the Executive Branch of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis. The functioning of the Office is rooted in the Constitution and is further detailed by the provisions of the Attorney General’s Act Cap 3.02 of the laws of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

One of the more prolific manifestations of the advisory functions of the Office of the Attorney General is its contribution to the legislative agenda of the government. As such, the responsibility of preparation of all legislation: from conceptualization to the presentation of Bills and the crafting of Regulations falls within the purview of the office.
